The Farm Hand's Almanac for November 17,  2008 - Occasional musings & photos from the farm hand

It's been cold.  Joe and crew (6 mares and Maximus) went through an entire round bale in 2 days time.  They keep going at that rate and we are sure to run out of hay quickly.  Need to get out there and measure Maximus (5 months old today) and Galahad (8 months old tomorrow).  The farrier is also due tomorrow for a round of 4-5 horses.  If I had known I was going to end up living this sort of lifestyle with all these wonderful animals about me,  I would have gone to vet school and farrier school.  Perhaps it's not too late.

Welcome to our farm.  For whatever reason you were drawn here, we hope you enjoy your visit.  We make a practice of updating our site very frequently, so if you are a regular visitor and have us bookmarked, refresh your page often. Thank you for visiting our website.

ODS is a unique Cleveland Bay Horse stud farm here in the United States in that our stallion; Joe lives out with his own herd of mares and their foals.  It is incredibly interesting to watch and observe the behaviors of the herd.  Living in such a way has given way to high conception rates, a very happy stallion, and foals growing up learning how to live in a family unit. Our newest addition, Fred  who we hope will grow up to be our outcross stallion will also eventually be turned out with his own herd of mares.  We have a small group of fillies consisting of OldDominion Gwynith, OldDominion Rhiannon, and OldDominion Olwen who will become Fred's mates.

Currently, ODS is home to twelve (12) purebred Cleveland Bay Horses , two (2) Thoroughbred mares, one (1) Cleveland Bay sport horse filly, one (1) Cleveland Bay sport horse gelding. Our resident breeding stallion is Quality Approved, Premium Rated, multiple Champion Cleveland Bay stallion,  Tregoyd JourneymanJoe (as he is affectionately known) was bred and raised by Colin and Margaret Green at Trenewydd Farm in Wales.  Joe is a remarkable stallion with valuable blood lines.  He is an excellent representation of the Cleveland Bay Breed and we expect he will do wonderful things for the Breed here in the United States.

Our Cleveland Bay sport horse gelding,  OldDominion Bedwyr, finishes out the horse population here at ODS.  In the fall of 2008 Big B (Bedwyr) endured 45 days of Natural Horsemanship training at the hand of Clinton Anderson's Ranch Manager.  He did remarkably well and developed a wonderful foundation from which to build.
